ANCHORING IN THE STORM
I spent the weekend in San Diego with some amazing play therapists co-leading a self-care retreat with a theme about
anchoring in the storm.

We learned about the stress response in the nervous system, attachment patterns, resiliency and finding gratitude and meaning in the challenges.  We focused on ways to
Reflect, Connect & Rebuild

People think that the work of play therapists is
all fun and games.
Yes, we have toys.  Yes, we play games.
But, children and families are hurting.

And the work these children do in the playroom is not always fun.
Often the play is about really, really hard stuff.
And children come to the playroom looking for someone that "gets it."
Someone that speaks their language.

Many play therapists are the ONLY play therapist at their agency.
Or in their community.  Some even in their whole city.
So they came to San Diego looking for people that "get it"
People that speak the language of play therapy.

And part of that language is speaking through metaphors.
Another part is finding people who can hold space
for you to show up in any condition and
be exactly as you are.

When you hear the announcement about the next
Anchoring in the Storm event,
give yourself an opportunity to experience what it is like to
reflect, connect and rebuild

Here's a small glimpse into what that would be like for you.

GETTING ANCHORED IN SAN DIEGO

REFLECT
We were surrounded by boats and we created a few of our own.
Play therapists know that working within a metaphor of the boats makes talking about hard things easier.

CONNECT
After our training day ends, we took a group excursion in the San Diego harbor.  We had dinner and danced.
We solidified old friendships and created new ones.  This isn't "networking"  - this is community.

REBUILD
By the end of our time together, we have rebuilt our boats - new paint, new sails, new goals.  We are ready to go back to our work with a renewed sense of hope.

ANCHORED
And we left with our anchors.
The ones we hold in our hearts AND the ones we hold in our hands.

We left feeling anchored into our ability to connect to ourselves during stressful times and in our ability to find gratitude and make meaning in the challenges.

Thanks to Alisha Denham at Momma Owls Minis for this hand-crafted treasure.

JEN'S JOURNAL
We asked a lot of questions this weekend,
but the first one was....

How am I really doing?
